Hello Parents! You should have received this link via email yesterday... it is for collecting online donations for our 5th Annual Eaglethon. (Very similar to Boosterthon but we keep 100% of all donations!)
The following are the expectations that have been discussed, modeled and practiced. There is a copy of these expectations in each student’s literacy notebook. Students are very familiar with these expectations and you should see on-going evidence of these expectations as part of your child’s independent reading program.
EXPECTATIONS FOR INDEPENDENT READING
Think Marks—You have heard of bookmarks!! This year, our students will be using Think Marks. They not only help readers keep up with their place in the book, but they also provide a place for students to document their thinking as they read. Beginning this week, they are due every Friday. Ask to see your student’s Think Mark each week! You will be impressed with how their literary thinking is growing!!
Weekly Grammar Practice—Each Monday, your student will be given some kind of weekly grammar practice assignment. Half will be due each Wednesday, and the second half due Friday. Additionally, each Friday, the students will take a short quiz over the grammar skills practiced from that week and any previous weeks.
This week in Math- we will continue our focus on rounding and adding/subtracting decimals.
This week in Social Studies - our Bill of Rights test has been pushed to Tuesday due to our Eaglethon Pep Rally this morning.
This week in Science - We will wrap up our study of destructive and constructive forces by learning more about Earthquakes and Volcanoes.
Eaglethon - Please be on the look out for an EMAIL regarding our 5th Annual Eaglethon happening during our specials next Thursday!
I hope you all had a fantastic Labor Day weekend! I myself went camping and saw my friend Jaden, not sure he was too happy to be at the same campground as his teacher :) and Mrs. Hellman was able to enjoy a few days at her family lake house at Lake Jackson!
This week in Math - we will be focusing on adding and subtracting decimals. We will be using models and algorithms before moving onto multiply and dividing decimals soon!
This week in Social Studies - we are working on our gallery wall display that represents 1 of the first ten amendments of the Bill of Rights. We will do a Gallery Walk on Friday to see some visual representation of the Bill of Rights. We will have a test on Monday over the Bill of Rights and Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens.
Wednesday - Progress Reports will go home! Please sign and return these ASAP!
Thursday we will have our second guidance lesson with Dr. Deal. AND fifth graders will get to visit the school store before school on Thursday!
Friday we will have our annual Patriot's Day celebration in honor of 9/11. Students are encouraged to wear Red, White, and Blue! We will be writing cards of appreciation for EMTs and other 1st responders in class! Also on Friday, Ident-a-Kid will be here! Flyers went home in Thursday folders last week!
Today was our 1st ever STEM day at Big Shanty and to say it was AWESOME would be an understatement!! Students had so much fun learning about flood control, designing, building and testing their levees to save STEM Town! I'm sad to announce that I didn't get a video of the levee that held the most water but I did get pictures!
