Welcome Back! We hope that you all had a relaxing Thanksgiving break!
Important Dates at a Glance:
As we close out the first half of the year, we are also wrapping up our fiction literacy unit. Right now we are digging into point of view. Not only are we analyzing character point of view, but we are going even deeper by trying to determine what shapes the point of view of book characters. We will consider how our point of view compares to or differs from character point of view.
After the first of the year, we will shift our focus to non-fiction text study. Can’t wait!!
Our informational text writing project is going very well. Our drafting is complete and we are now fully involved in revision strategies. I am so excited about what these kids are producing!! We will learn and apply several revision strategies as we continue our journey towards becoming professional writers. At the end of this project, students will have a published booklet about Westward Expansion. It will include many of the non-fiction text features that can be find in published informational texts!! That is pretty exciting!!
Keep in mind that your students are encouraged to bring their writing workshop folders home to share the work they are doing with YOU!! They should be able to tell you all about how they are applying revision strategies (they can be found on the PINK Student Checklist for Informational Writing) and taking their writing project from good to GREAT!!
Please ask your students about their Eagle Eye on Reading progress on a regular basis. You should be seeing Eagle Eye forms and signing them as your student completes books. Also, we will continue with weekly grammar sheets, due every Wednesday and Friday, along with grammar quizzes on Friday as well!
In Social Studies and Science we are wrapping up our Civil War unit and our Chemical and Physical Changes unit! Students will be making a Civil War review book and rotating through review stations using the Spheros and Osmos! Study Guides for both tests will come home this week! The Civil War test will be Thursday, December 8th and our chemical and physical changes test will be Thursday, December 15th!
In Math - we are digging deeper with our fractions! We started multiplying fractions and will soon be moving into dividing fractions!
There is a lot going on before our Winter Break! Please try your best to be here on time everyday!
Tuesday is the 5th grade Thanksgiving Fest! We hope that you can join us for an early Thanksgiving lunch :) Mrs. Janney's class will go to lunch at 11:55 and Mrs. Hellman at 12:00. Lunch has been extended 15 minutes (45 total) to accommodate the line and allow for family pictures on the stage!

This week in Math we will continue to work on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. We will begin using a new app - front row, to do some online review/practice of standards being taught in class. If you are BYOD please remember to bring in your devices!
In Social Studies we will be sharing our Battle Boxes (sharing what we have learned about important Civil War battles) that we have been working on in class.
In Science we will wrap up our studies on Chemical and Physical Changes with Gobble, Gobble, Turkey day!
